The Historic Fives Court Wall

The cottage is situated in a small courtyard opposite the owner's house. There is off-road parking for one car. The owners have a selection of pets including chicken, Zwartbles sheep and Shetland ponies, which are kept in the field next to their house.

The field

The barn is well known locally as a landmark because the east end is formed by a high wall which was once used for the ancient game of Wessex Fives. This game is known to have been played in many churchyards from the early 15th century. By 1753 the cost of repairs to church windows and outside brickwork had become so high, the Bishop of Bath and Wells finally banned the game from diocese churchyards; the courts were dug up. Many towns and villages in Somerset and Dorset built Fives walls, usually in pub gardens, so they could continue to play. This wall is in the style of the earliest, so is thought to have been built around 1755. It is one of only six remaining walls built at the time in Somerset and Dorset. Fives was adopted by public schools and its popularity as a village game waned. Local records show it was repaired by Napoleonic prisoners of war (1805-1815) so their officers held at the Windmill Inn opposite could play the Basque game of pelota.
